Film Noir

Image
Lighting: Lighting in film noir tends to be quite extreme, there seems to be an extreme emphasis on adding more contrast between light and dark e.g.  This was most likely done in order to make the main figures seem more glamorous and attractive. While This scene does not necessarily follow the same lighting as the above images, the scene does still demonstrate extreme lighting to an extent due to the black and white colouration. The scene fits the typical conventions of a film noir film, the most obvious being the black and white colouration, the male lead and his attire are also quite common conventions of a classic noir film.

The filler light on the side of her face also creates multiple shadows on the other side of her face which create the idea that the woman possibly prefers to keep her identify hidden from other people. This image creates the impression that this woman is not to be trusted and is mischievous due to the dark lighting and the plain expression on her face. Smoke illuminated by the light also suggests that this person is not to be trusted and gives the impression that this woman could be seen as a 'rebel' or an antagonist. In this image low-key lighting is also used. Top lighting is the only light used to emphasise and highlight the key features of the persons face, for example her cheek bones are highlighted and stand out due to the top lighting . The no back
