Marxism & hegemony: blog tasks

1) Re-read the Mail Online review of Capital. Why does it suggest that Capital features a left-wing ideology?

The review states that capital has a left wing view due to the constant sympathy shown towards POC characters and how they portrayed white characters

2) Choose three quotes from the review that are particularly critical of Capital and paste them into your blogpost. Do you agree with the criticisms? Why?

The last 20 minutes contained no plot. Whatever story there had ever been was over.

Capital was as stuffed full with fashionable causes as Jeremy Corbyn’s function diary.

A Muslim man whose only crime was to burn the odd Union Jack (he fell in with the wrong crowd, m’lud) was dragged off to the cells by anti-terror police who were, naturally, bigoted and faceless. The crusading lawyer (a woman, of course) who had him freed was fuming about the Terrorism Act, which she called ‘deplorable’.

3) What scenes or characters from Capital could be read as promoting left-wing ideology?

Any scene that contained the immigrant warden can be seen as promoting a left-wing ideology due to the sympathetic light in which she was shown in.

4) What about the other side of the argument - are there any aspects of Capital that reinforce the status quo in capitalist London?

The foreign wealthy white bankers were a typical view of a western capitalist society, especially a London society.

1) Why did the Daily Mail suggest The Casual Vacancy promoted a left-wing ideology?

The plot and representation regarding the wealthier individuals are why the daily mail suggests that the casual vacancy promoted a left wing ideology.

2) How does the article suggest characters, narrative and setting are used to promote a left-wing ideology?

Barry fairbrothe- this character often represents a very typical left wing ideology.

3) What research is quoted regarding BBC bias and what did it find? Do you think the BBC is biased?

The bias used against the BBC is "is the BBC too cosy with JK rowling" I personally don't believe that the BBC is biased

4) Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggests people are kept under control through active consent - the control of 'common sense'. How could you apply the Daily Mail or the BBC to the idea of hegemony and dominant ideologies in the UK media?

gramsci's theory of hegemoney states that control is achieved through consent. With the daily mail constantly expressing their views (views which appeal to middle class white individuals); this helps make the viewers believe that their views is common sense- hence giving consent
