Statement of Intent - Entropy

According to the brief requirements

Conventions

I will be making a political crime drama that will have elements of a psychological thriller called Entropy. The show will follow a terminated London investigator being called back into service by the head of the metropolitan police in order to pick up the case his partner/wife was killed taking 6 months prior. His mental situation (depression, anxiety and PTSD) will present a different view of what it means to be main, strong male by showing weakness (subverting common stereotypes of male leads in film/TV); The importance of this varying view of what it means to be a strong man is due to today’s environment of gender confusion and discovery; understanding that the concept of masculinity has evolved. Along with that, the premise of the show is to also make mental health less of a taboo within households. A clear inspiration for Entropy is the film the Dark Knight by christopher nolan, but rather than focusing on a violence, (where there will be minor examples of, none of which will be clear to be seen in most shots) a significant focus will be on mental aspect of insanity and sanity, a concept that will be explored often with the main protagonist questioning his own sanity throughout the narrative, trying to convince himself that he’s different from the shows antagonist. The age rating for the drama is 12A, allowing for brief examples of insanity being shown in the trailer. Steve Neals theory of repetition and difference is apparent with the overarching message of political elitism being present throughout, by this I mean the repetition of an overarching political elitist issue with a larger than life issue and visuals of the show being the difference (e.g  the show is similar to the House of Cards when it comes to the idea of a corrupt elite, but the visuals and aesthetics of the drama will be different to shows of the same sub genre). As mentioned before, there will be a clear emphasis on representing mental disorders; to keep the show suitable for watershed hours, the representation of the mental health will not be shown explicitly, instead it will be shown in “dream sequences” that can range from mundane and almost mirror images of reality, to very abstract representations of his thoughts. Another important aspect of the show will be lighting; in an attempt to even further differentiate the show from other dramas within the same sub genre, a huge emphasis on using extreme colours to try and further push emotion will be present tastefully (mostly in dream sequences) as not to overpower the screen but to accentuate certain emotions the character is feeling, an inspiration for the colour grading is the film “Only God forgives”. There will also be an attempt to use sound effectively, with a focus on using bot chaotic and peaceful audio, as to show the binary opposition between the protagonist and antagonist. Finally, the actual filming of the show will show the protagonist in angles of weakness, and the antagonist in angles of power; but scenes in which both are in the same shot, the camera will be at the same level for both, to try and show similarity between the two
